I've had a few people complain about my connection (in NS Combat). Apparently I have a low ping, which is good, but I am hard to hit (sometimes?), which is bad (er... for them, not for me). I have Comcast cable (formerly AT&T broadband).

Does anyone have any advice? Or links? I'm sure there are guides to optimize a HL connection for non-suckage, but I haven't found any useful advice. I think I'm mostly using default settings, but I remember knowing enough to change things last year (like the rate command and stuff). The extent of my console knowledge is just enough to get by. When I open up net_graph it doesn't say I have any "loss" or "choke," both of which are... uh... bad, I guess. Even if someone knows the default connection settings (I'm assuming there are defaults), I could try restoring those first to see if it would help.

I know one of the AoL people (I get Bob and Demandred confused; maybe both of them) have complained about me being hard to hit (especially as a skulk). Actually, I've only had people complain when I'm a skulk. No one complains if I'm a marine, fade, or anything else (I usually fade if I'm an alien, so I don't have a lot of time as other lifeforms).

Of course, in the game, I am trying not to get hit. That is, I'm not sure if people are complaining about a real problem or not. When I play on random servers, someone invariably insists I must be cheating (if I'm doing well; if not, no cheating!), and I don't cheat. So sometimes when people complain about stuff it's just BS. Some people have no problem hitting me, even with celerity (and leap!).

If it's important: I think I get like 500 KB/s downstream and 30 KB/s upstream. Last I checked, anyway.

This may also be helpful:
Ping statistics for 63.238.72.25:
Packets: Sent = 93, Received = 93, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 31ms, Maximum = 41ms, Average = 32ms

your connection is good but hte problem is its faster then most people who play oin that server so its harder to kill you but im not sure about this. i have a decent ping while i play i see no problems its mostlikely the hitboxes recently i noticed how bad some of them are like a skulk wont die from a head shot in close range of the shotgun like right in its face, also it works with everything else like that so if you are extremly close to the shotgun it will miss everytime so you have to use as a medium range gun not close

After reading waaaaaaay more about rates than I wanted to, I think I have better settings now. I don't recall exactly, but something like rate=20000, cmdrate=75, updaterate=75 (fps_max = 75, and I read somewhere that anything higher than your max FPS is useless).

I should now be even easier to kill. Hopefully. Er...

i think the default settings are

rate 7500
cl_cmdrate 40
cl_updaterate 25

30 ping is good but it shouldnt be a problem for somebody with a 75 ping to hit you. sometimes people with low ping still warp around the screen. this has always puzzled me. anybody with low ping that warps i suspect of cheating, but thats just me.

i used to use 25000, 101, 100 but found that as new updates to cs came out, i needed to lower my rates to get better registration. with your connection speed, i would think that you can use 10000, 60, 50 or something above default at least.
i never said everything i said
