The current mainstream favorite is Ubuntu. When you run the install, it will automatically see your Windows partition and ask you about setting up dual boot. WINE is the Windows/Directx emulator for games. As far as getting every game working on WINE, your mileage may vary but it's the best place to start.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 but it failed to load install properly in a windows enviroment. I'm going to test out the two HD i have sitting here to see if they are still good and if s i'm going to use one of them for linux the other might be just for storage for now

You can't actually install them from windows. You have to boot from the CD/DVD.

Best way to do that is jump on Windows, make a backup of Firefox bookmarks on there to C:\ and the load Ubuntu and import the back up. Also, if you use Ventrilo, since Ventrilo has not been ported to Linux, the best option is a program called Mangler (comes in Linux, Windows, and Android flavor, so yes, a phone can not connect to a vent server!) You may have trouble using the standard installer for Mangler, so search YouTube or Google for an install guide that uses the terminal to install the repositories and everything else. Flash isn't that great in Linux, so sometimes you'll find it runs great (normally Youtube) and other times it'll be extremely choppy (normally everywhere else), so don't freak when a site using Flash feels shitty.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on my little Asus netbook and it's wonderful.

I got the bookmarks ported over fine just before i read your post. suck that vent doesn't work but i'm going to try to get wine working and that might help. if not i can always switch back over to the windows HD to play
