It's possible that trying newer or older versions of your graphics drivers will improve performance. I'm not sure it would make too much of a difference. Might we worth a try though.

mat_dxlevel 70 or -dxlevel 70 in your launch options to lower the dx level manually, you can also try lowering res and the adv cid options

DX is coding for graphics. If you know what OpenGL is, then just think of DX as a slimmed down OpenGL. OpenGL is nothing more than DX with more shit to play with (thus the reason Doom3 is OpenGL).

All water, lighting, and texture effects in a game are caused by DX.
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of 'hot xxx galore'. While I clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", I muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

basically lowering the directx level (dxlevel) will lower the prettyness of effects and maske it easier for your card to render stuff

Acceptable levels:
70 = 7.0
80 = 8.0
81 = 8.1
90 = 9.0

example: -dxlevel 81 for DirectX 8.1 rendering

If you are getting spikes, also make sure you do not have other applications or programs running that do not need to be...like mIRC or something...

Word is that much of the spikage is coming from HL2 and it's sounds.

Your best bet is to turn everything off and stick the sound quality at med or low.
